Graveyard words for a greater understanding of epitaphs

(when visiting old graveyards and examining the epitaphs on gravestones, there are certain words and phrases which could be difficult or impossible to understand without knowing what the words in this unit mean)

Ad perpetuam rei memoriam.
For the perpetual remembrance of the thing.
A.D., Anno Domini
Latin for "In the Year of Our Lord" [followed by the number of the year].
Adsum.
Here I am.
Aetas suae.
Aged [+ number].
Amicus humani generis.
A humanitarian, a philanthropist.
Ars longa, vita brevis.
Art is long, life is short.
Beatae memoriae.
Of blessed memory.
Caput mortuum.
Death head. Residue.
Carpe diem.
Enjoy the present day.
Cui Bono?
For what good? For whose benefit?
d.
Died.
Dabit deus his quoquo finem.
God will put an end to these also.
God will grant an end even to these (troubles).
Dare vela.
To set sail.
Dei gratia.
By the grace of God.
Deo volente. D.V.
God willing.
